The British Army began awarding a brass "Wound Stripe" in 1916, with approval by King George V. Additional badges were granted for subsequent wounds.

Originally made from a material gold braid, all Army service personnel who had been wounded were entilied to wear a wound stripe on the left sleeve of their uniform.

Many companies produced metal versions, like this one, as the material ones were easily damaged.
